🏒 Lucian Marin It will be nice if Apple could scale M1 to other Macs: 2x M1 in MBP 16 and iMac, 4x and 8x M1 in Mac Pro. Maybe even a 2x M1 Mac mini.
👂 Sly Am i the only one who's not excited about this M1 chip? Ram is inside the chip, everything is hard soldered, you can't replace any component. I know it has been this way with macs lately but this time it's even worse. It seems to me that the sole purpose of those new chips is to make them more like iphones and ipads so that the only way to upgrade is to keep buying the newer models.
😃 Javier I am more excited with Risc V that M1. Apple vertical grow soon will have us all paying a a monthly fee just to be able to turn on our superfast Apple devices. And the kicker is, people will pay. He he.
Miso What project are you all working on these days?
Rsm This past week I worked on two books and made excellent progress.
🧐 Nrmn I started working on a URL shortener service for the inclined individuals that want to host it themselves. Any must haves in a self-hosted, simple URL shortener service?
👽 Paul Webb I'm working on V2 of socii.network, I hope to be done in Q1 of this year.
Sergiusz I am trying to make an interactive version of Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata
James Baxter I'm transcribing "The Scoops" in Renoise, which I made with Charlie Brooker in 1996 on an Atari ST. 2 months in and 80% done. Pointlessness taken to a whole new level.
🏒 Lucian Marin Mastodon is dead. Most people have migrated to Bluesky or Threads.
👽 Paul Webb HARD disagree. Mastodon is fantastic for me. Bluesky is quiet af and Threads is just wanna be viral content. I guess it just boils down to who you follow. To me, small web folks, hackers, and those who spend time making lil' projects for internet lovers spend most of their time on Mastodon.
🔘 Nat Voisey Mastodon is great for communities that have a niche. Have you tried Ivory by Tapbots?
🐵 David subreply is dead. Almost nobody comes here. ;-)
HaoLi I deleted my mastodon account a while ago. it's trash.
🤮 What Really "Bluesky or Threads" ew
Miso What's your favorite text editor?
😃 Javier my favorite editor[copy paste in your favorite browser url bar] data:text/html, <body contenteditable style="background-color:white;color:black; font: 2rem/1.5 monospace;max-width:60rem color:white ;margin:0 auto;padding:4rem;">
🤘 Matthew Emacs, but I can use ed and vi when they're better suited to a given task.
🥝 Mr Sometimes I use atom, I hate it because it's slow to open. Too lazy to change it as I rarely use text editors. Small tweaks are made with native tools as they are fast and effective. (right-click>edit results in TextEdit on MacOS and Notepad on Windows) Documents in full feature software. Software dev in IDE with debugging tools. Vim or nano when I'm on linux as most gui software on linux is god awful.
🐢 Keb Sublime Text 4.
🤖 Seirdy Neovim. Can be lightweight or can be a full IDE with the language-server protocol and tree-sitter, or anything in between. Scriptable in Lua (with LuaJIT) because VimScript sucks. A keybind lets me edit any textarea in a floating nvim window, including this one.
Alessandro What books are you reading currently?
🔮 ferrofluidruid The Iron Druid Chronicles now on book 4 and they are just delightful page turners
🐵 George Silent Spring by Rachel Carson
LatinCharacters The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
🤠 Ryan White Reading 'Going Infinite', by Michael Lewis. All about SBF and the FTX collapse. Interesting read, but not necessary.
🌲 Mikey Hayes Just finished Iron Gold , 4th entry in the Red Rising Series.
Terry Starting a thread so i can keep my account. Feel free to reply below to keep yours :D
👽 Rahul Krishna Still figuring out how this works
🧐 Jordan Thanks Terry!
🥝 Mr are they deleting user names fore inactive accounts? I typically lurk...
👤 Erik Kjell Done, and thanks
Naoya Ao Done. And thanks.
🏒 Lucian Marin Replaced Fira Sans (311 KB) with Route 159 (55 KB). Even if it's not the perfect typeface, I'll keep looking for lightweight replacements.
🐢 Keb looks good on my Windows machine!
👨‍💻 Matthieu V. Could it be possible to have some dark theme with the Android app ? Or a theme toggle somewhere ? Thank you very much for having developped Su reply (:
Rsm I wasn't familiar with this font. Looks interesting. What did the creator mean by this sentence: "It is designed to take wide countertops inside letters, including lowercase b, d, p, q, making it even harder to collapse even in small size"? Wide countertops?
Mikael If care about weight, have you considered font-family:sans-serif? It's even lighter at 0 KB. ;)
🧉 Martin Finally updated my /now page. Anyone else have one? If so, share! :) martinrue.com/now
💩 Niklas The short story you're sharing on your now page sounds like you're living the dream! :) Glad you can explore new places and learn new languages. Here's my now page, that I actually should update again: niklasbuehler.com/...
🤔 David That's a neat experience you're having! Also, the /now page is a good idea. I may create one now after I finish playing around with a little app
🔻 Trinity update 28w later: currently at trinity.moe/#now
James Kirk How's Barcelona?
🏒 Lucian Marin LinkedIn initially rejected two bug reports from me. The first was fixed. For the second one they just deleted a post I couldn't access when logged in. Now I want to build an alternative. Every account can have a resume, post jobs, share stuff with mentions and private messages.
🗨️ Fui I haven't used linkedIn in years. Left tired of all the spam tactics employed. It also didn't help their efforts of trying to make of it another engagement seeking platform. Regardless, an alternative would be very welcome. (So many words just to say 'go for it')
👨‍💻 Matthieu V. An ActivityPub federated alternatives ?
🧐 Nrmn How about using minds.com instead?
☕ Tk Master good point!
Adsr I've always hated Linkedin. It feels bloated and spammy. Angellist and StackOverflow have been much more convenient to find companies that are a good fit for me and vice versa. Looking forward to see what you come up with. Good luck!
🍺 Paul I guess it's that time of the season again where I come up with silly projects for myself while looking for a new job.
🏒 Lucian Marin I'm in the same boat. I made Subreply open source while looking for a new job. I gave myself more work to do.
👽 Paul Webb Hear hear! I just updated chronver.org and its module. This job market is tough so my search became passive.
hautacam I've started emulator development. Wrote a CHIP-8 emulator in JavaScript (or rather an interpreter) and will tackle an Intel 8080 emulator in C next.
🏒 Lucian Marin Subreply fits the description.
Jan Waiting for 16kb.club. (hey, hey)
James Kirk 1MB.club is also worth checking out.
🐢 Keb What is your RSS Reader of choice? Currently using Inoreader, but wondering about alternatives.
🧐 Nrmn I've never been a big RSS Reader user but Fraidycat looks just too good.
👨‍💻 Matthieu V. Big fan of Miniflux but I was using Inoreader before (:
😃 Javier I used Feedbro browser extension (add-on).
James Kirk I use Feeder on Android. Basic, but it does the job. I have used Inoreader in the past and liked its UI however the free version has ads, right? Also used Feedly before which was okayish.
👨‍💻 Matthieu V. Just came along obsidian.md it make me want to structure my notes/ideas but I don't really know where and how to start... Maybe it would be a great software to start doing some daily journaling
🦇 Arr Not F/LOSS, tough?
😃 Javier I tried Evernote and other myriad of tools to organize my data too. No luck so far. Visualizing things in a way that evoke/trigger my memory is tricky. I do my daily journaling with a python console I wrote that stores my musings with the date and current weather temperature on a single text file that gets checked in on a local git repo. It's pretty boring. I should post the python console in Github or something.
Nick S. I downloaded Obsidian recently, and as a casual Wikipedian, enjoy the idea of [[linking]] more than I like Notion databases. I've always wanted to use one of these knowledgebase apps, but my life simply isn't complex enough to warrant it yet :)
🎲 Jamie I got started on this sort of note taking by picking a specific complex topic I wanted to learn more about. Making it a tool for a clearly defined "project" greatly narrowed the scope of learning to use it! (YMMV)
Rsm I tried that, and finally went with zettlr.com. Came from joplin, but it did funny things with files. And, of course, TiddlyWiki has been a constant companion for years.
🗿 Kohei I'm starting college in a few months. Does anyone here have advice for anything?
😃 Javier Some experience a culture shock in the dorms or the classroom. Expectations are high and unknown. Lectures may sound familiar or unfamiliar. If I had to go back I would take better care of my time management and clear, concise and attainable academic and personal goals. I would not be afraid to say no if comes down to do things that I clearly don't like.
☝️ Jean-David Moisan What are you going to study?
Eric H. Most important part is to just show up to class & pay attention. No phone or browsing. Most exams will be straight forward if you're attentive. Finished college about 8 years ago and honestly found ratemyprofessor very helpful for picking good instructors.
Zero Edge Drop any class or professor (within 2 week cut off) that you think you will have a hard time passing.
💻 Kenneth Jensen Don't be afraid to change your major. Join a club or two, and talk to your professors; they're people, too!
✝️ Jerrod Gamotan Logically Disproving the Big Bang in 17 Seconds youtu.be/R4LyMq6azbg
👂 Sly That's the longest 17 seconds i have ever watched! Time is truly relative! That's why i believe in the Big Bang!
🐢 Keb what are some options excluding TypeScript and Flow for type-checking a Node project?
🧐 Nrmn I'm honestly not sure there are any except using a cross-compiled language. Almost everything is nowadays compiling to WASM. But there are other languages that compile directly to Javascript as well. For example dart.dev
🏛️ Brandon Pittman You could write it in Reason and output JS. :)
