What laptop does everyone use?

Macbook Pro Early 2015. It's showing its age, thinking of getting a ThinkPad next.

Still on a mac. Does a great Job! but I miss the love for developers. If my employer didn't pay for it I wouldn't invest so much.

For work - MBP with the shitty keyboard and touchbar. For me - MBA with a better keyboard but way less RAM.

I've been running a Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition with Arch Linux for the past couple of years. Aside from crappy speakers, it's a solid device. I'll probably upgrade to something from System76 when it eventually bites the dust.

Early 2011 MacBook Pro. I did put in an SSD a couple of years ago. Now hoping this one will last until the ARM MacBooks are released.

Surface Book 2 with a Surface Dock for my desk. It's a dream combination that I've found myself very productive with - but I fear the repairs process will be a nightmare when the time comes. Previous machine was a 2015 MacBook Pro.

What are the specs on yours? Mine was the i5 with 8GB of Ram, the lower quality screen and a 240 SSD.
Oknaj
I have i7, 16 GB of Ram, high quality screen and 512 SSD. I decided to go all in since I use it privately / professionally.

That makes sense, that's a nice machine :) I did end up buying an HD screen and put that on myself. Can't stand those low res screens. That's part of the reason I love thinkpads so much is that they are so easy to tinker with.

I'm using work-issued MBP. Touchpad and display are great, but I don't think I'd buy it with my own money.

Surface Pro 6 - which is lovely, although I'm mostly using desktop these days.

A friend gifted me a 12.5" Lenovo X250. I've upgraded the panel to 1920x1080, put it to 8Gb RAM, 250Gb SSD, and a second internal battery to supplement the giant bumpy external one. Wonderful general use machine. Only let down slightly by the i3 processor and the occasional hitch when decoding video (could be RAM or something else but closing the lid and opening fixes it).

Dell Inspiron P25T. It's a piece of crap, but at least it has a touch screen.

T420 upgraded to 16GB RAM, with Debian 10.4 and occasionally whatever other systems I'm testing.

Nice. Have you considered Corebooting (given you have one of the devices that is capable)?
🔻 Trinity
I've considered it but it seems rather difficult. I haven't found many good guides and the ones I did find were very complicated and not very reassuring. I know my way around this stuff but not enough to chance sacrificing my firmware - I don't have a backup laptop.
🌚 Nlggers
You can make a backup of the EPROM chip's memory before flashing. I read out the ROM content 3 times and diffed the corresponding bins to make sure the external debugging device had a good clamp on the chip before I attempting to do anything involving reflashing the device with a modified ROM.

I use a Corebooted ThinkPad x220 running OpenBSD 6.6 (I need to upgrade to 6.7 but the upgrade script is a little strange with my full disk encryption setup).
🔻 Trinity
How well does it run? I'd like to downsize from my T420 at some point but I'm worried about speed because it's already noticeably slow on Handbrake - though I suppose that's what desktops are for.
🌚 Nlggers
Back when I was running Arch it was a bit faster than OpenBSD I find. That's probably due to the fact that OpenBSD does some kind of kernel layout randomization that is a bit extreme iirc. That and they've disabled hyper-threading entirely to mitigate the speculative execution issues. I'd say back on Linux it was quite snappy with my SSD and 1866Mhz RAM upgrade. Unfortunately on newer UEFI versions Lenovo limits RAM frequencies. Coreboot fixes this however. :^)

X1s are the best. I also have a mbp with butterfly switches but absolutely hate it after switching to thinkpads keyboard.

I'm still using a 2012 MacBook Pro. Probably about time I replaced it though...
