🚀 Jason Lex What's the thing you hate most about mainstream social media?

🏎️ Fast too many external articles. not enough original thoughts.
Minh Do The promise of communication that doesn't result in any real communication. It's empty. A skeuomorphic version of talking isn't talking.
📉 Bill Everyone is trying to *out - do* everyone else. It's all a game of "how much can i make everyone else jealous of me"
🎯 Gallium Oxide The 7 megabytes of Javascript and 7 seconds it takes to load a page. I genuinely wonder what it's doing, considering how shit the underlying algorithms really are (both for serving relevant ads and surfacing interesting content).
👍 Lorin H. a billion irrelevant ads - I let everyone track me specifically to get proper targeting and I still repeatedly get kickstarter scams and irrelevant stuff. It's as if advertisers don't care how to target properly.
😾 Oskar I am still amazed how shitty amazon books recommendation are for me, even with all of their tracking, having my physical orders and wishlist. Discovery mechanism simply doesn't exist and it just offers whatever it thinks will sell.
⚡ Kay No wonder why they let Goodreads die. So much potential but so little effort.
Derrick coordinated censorship, propaganda & astroturfing by state funded/mafia cartels
🌊 Zero Two content is always hit or miss
✔️ Ja Not much longform or well-thought-out content
⚾ Tbeseda The info-overload when I check out my timeline.
⚒️ Dopu the likes. the performance.
🎣 Fish the need to be one thing
Niccolo Machiavelli I don't really "hate" I find amusing to observer co-dependent relationships between sociopath narcissists and their enablers
Ice same. don't "hate" but just mildly terrified
Bat How fucking stupid everyone is.
🔮 Liv It dangles the promise of connecting with other people and ruins any chance of that happening by making both parties do it on a global stage.
🪐 Danilo Do you think it's still worth trying? Or just quit the mainstream stuff?
🔮 Liv I continue trying! But the pure moments are rare and the negatives are sometimes overwhelming. It's a solvable problem (prioritizing intimacy and word-of-mouth over megaphone social mechanics), but until someone actually builds the better thing... we have what we have.
Xy compared to 90's and early 00's internet, it feels impossible to create meaningful interactions with strangers
Hai yep, can't make any new friend in the last 10 years
Xy we're more connected than ever, but all of that magic is gone. i even remember having relationships that formed in chat rooms.
Cole Hudson Yet this site seems like a good counter-example, there's hope yet!
Xy maybe the answer for these types of issues is to just take a step back and re-evaluate
😾 Oskar Pfff, old farts. Kids make friends today all the time. Look at their content creation collaboration frequency on youtube or this chinese youtube app. Probably 3/4 of ppl here are ~30, which is, like, retirement age?
🌊 Zero Two this site does not make it easier for me to interact with u, just less clutter in the way.
Omar Khan pictures /avatar sometimes get in the way of discussions and ideas
