They don't seem to work that well. For example, @cosmo's #til matches everything with a 't', 'i', 'l' sequence in it.

I think the #hashtags phenom has a distancing/anonymizing effect on Twitter, people see the hashtag but not so much the author. Then attention-seekers and griefers join in and poison the channel.
