This is exactly why censorship is a terrible idea. I'm under no obligation to approve of, celebrate, or accept your interpretation of reality. I would go so far as to argue that your sexual identity has resulted partly from aggressive online censorship that painted any criticism of your identity expression as "hate speech." First off, there is no such thing as "transgender". You can mutilate your body all you want and take all the pharmaceuticals you can, you still won't be able to change your gender. You're just going to look weird and condemn yourself to a lifetime of social agony. Secondly, nobody owes you comfort and happiness. If words offend you, then you're already vulnerable to all forms of communication and you should stay away from people in general - both online and offline alike.

Intersex is an anomaly of the chromosomes - an unfortunate genetic condition. Intersex people can do nothing to change that condition, much like regular people can do nothing to change their gender. Nobody is "trans"! You are that what you're born. I don't want anyone thrown off a cliff. However, if you tell me that you woke up this morning feeling that your gender changed, I'd advise you to seek mental help and not mutilate your body. Also, kindly stay out of education!

Humans are, as far as we know, unprecedented. Computers (as we know them) do not exist in nature, yet we can build them. Our brains are pretty complicated compared to most other species. Glitches, like being a woman despite being born as a man, should be expected.

"Glitches" being the keyword here. Everyone is entitled to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. However, people with mental "glitches" should stay out of education. Nobody under 13 should be exposed to anything remotely sexualized, let alone any sexuality with glitches in it.

Since when is transgenderism sexualized? Gender as a social concept is beyond what one's genitals are. If glitches like these are so common, let's think of them as features. The bugfixes are considered torture and it's not compromising any security functions. It's possible to address human sexuality without any form of perversion. Let's tell kids that there are people like them and that they aren't alone if they feel... wrong.

I disagree with your views but I respect that they are what you believe to be true and the fact that you advocate for what you believe is likely rooted in good intentions. It's my view that gender does not exist and that biological sex is determined by chromosomes. I believe genital mutilation is an abhorrent treatment for the mentally ill and my hope is that this practice will be eliminated within my lifetime.

I too believe in the abolishment of gender but probably in a dramatically different way. If you think sex is determined by chromosomes, what about the (somewhat atypical) third sex chromosome in many? It's possible to be XY, XX, XXY, XYY, etc. Doesn't that go against the idea of any sort of binary in terms of sex?

Those chromosome abnormalities are exceptionally rare, and they're unfortunate but abnormalities nevertheless. Some people are born blind. Does that mean that eyesight is a spectrum and a choice, and one can alter it with their mind?

No, but while the lack of eyesight is a physical ailment, being born as the wrong gender is more of a psychological ailment. I will play devil's advocate and say that unfortunately some moderation is still needed in today's society. I agree with you: it is archaic to have to police which words people use. I try to see this policing as an act of kindness towards people that for one reason or another may be sensitive to a given word. My wife has Romani ethnicity so the expression "gypped" hurts her a little every time she hears it. "Oh, but she can just ignore it!" Yeah, that's not how brains work.

Like many things, it seems to be a necessary balancing act. Take some of the forums that you or I find to be engaging and thoughtful (eg SSC, Hacker News, etc.)--poor content and drivel still needs to be removed if it breaks simple guidelines. However, we need to allow free thought and discussions if any of us wish to expand our own knowledge and discover new perspectives. Critical thinking requires challenges.

I agree with this sentiment. I am concerned with the direction western tech platforms are taking with regard to censorship. My anecdotal experience has been that in the early 2000s censorship was more prevalent among companies outside of the US (Daily Motion for example) and with the introduction of American companies offering similar services (YouTube) things became more free. Now the opposite has become true with Google introducing programatic censorship via Perspective API

So my questions sideways about this discussion are: why did you choose this username? Is it intentionally to be inflammatory? And if so, why is that a priority? Does it stem from a need for attention? I doubt anyone can seriously defend the worth of exercising free speech to use slurs. People who choose usernames like this misuse the free speech argument as a bulwark for 1) needing to cause a stir wherever they appear to feel important or 2) actually being racist or whatever

I think in part my feelings towards the pervasiveness of censorship online did motivate my decision to pick this username. Certainly I would say it is my primary motivation.

I suppose because I'm curious to gauge the way tech workers interact with someone who they may disagree with from a moral or ideological standpoint while I attempt to share information and have discussions in a well intentioned manner. If my username provokes discussion of censorship I'm not sure if that will help my cause. Maybe it will, or maybe it will not. Anyhow I'll try to make quality posts until I'm inevitably removed.

Best of luck! My first suggestion is that you install the "Get CRX" extension. This will allow you to more easily sideload extensions which must manually be unpacked as a result of the removal of various Google APIs. In my humble opinion this is by far the worst hassle of the Ungoogled Chromium browser but the gains in user privacy are well worth the extra few minutes required to install extensions.

With such cheap hosting and no monetary incentive on this site, why would this need to implement censorship? Will "offensive" usernames or slurs prevent others from joining in discussion? There's no upvotes or downvoted to raise this content to the top which would be toxic. It will just get lost in the noise of the crowd
