I will play devil's advocate and say that unfortunately some moderation is still needed in today's society. I agree with you: it is archaic to have to police which words people use. I try to see this policing as an act of kindness towards people that for one reason or another may be sensitive to a given word. My wife has Romani ethnicity so the expression "gypped" hurts her a little every time she hears it. "Oh, but she can just ignore it!" Yeah, that's not how brains work.

Like many things, it seems to be a necessary balancing act. Take some of the forums that you or I find to be engaging and thoughtful (eg SSC, Hacker News, etc.)--poor content and drivel still needs to be removed if it breaks simple guidelines. However, we need to allow free thought and discussions if any of us wish to expand our own knowledge and discover new perspectives. Critical thinking requires challenges.
