🌚 Nlggers Here is another link on Startpage (as posts here are limited to one URL per post). techrights.org/201... Thanks for the tip on Runnaroo. Of late I have been trying to use Searx but the instances don't always work to my liking. Frequently requests to the supported search APIs get filtered or page load times are inconsistent. I've also used Yandex but I understand they are quite invasive. Search is a surprisingly uncompetitive space.
👉 Oscar Meh. I've been running into a bunch of queries where Google definitely understands my intent better than Runnaroo. In many examples Google shows results from forum threads instead of trying to shove me loosely related products. I'm probably switching again soon but don't know to what. Maybe DDG. Maybe I roll my own UI where I either a) select which intent I have with the query (information/shopping/etc) which then uses a specific search engine based on it.

Scott Lamora Also need to be able to delete our accounts
👉 Oscar This is a good point. ? It's required by GDPR. What about when deleting an account, should the comments remain, with username "deleted" or something, or should they be deleted altogether? I would definitely prefer the former.

🐢 Xia Someone posted this a couple hours ago: I hate the news. aaronsw.com/weblog...
👉 Oscar That's a great article, thanks for sharing! The key point is this: "With the time people waste reading a newspaper every day, they could have read an entire book about most subjects covered and thereby learned about it with far more detail and far more impact than the daily doses they get dribbled out by the paper. But people, of course, wouldn't read a book about most subjects covered in the paper, because most of them are simply irrelevant."

🐊 Andromeda Pie Sign for a new social network promoting itself as trustworthy and the first thing I see is a racial slur lmao
👉 Oscar If you guys are referring to how do you perceive that as racist? I haven't seen a single thing he/she has written here indicating any form of racism.

Zero Edge Most content consumption leads to anger, hate, and mental pain. Not consuming content leads to mellowness and peace but an uninformed stance. I used to think the world was "nice" and most people were "good" but it seems harder and harder to find those things I used to think. Is the internet just very good at highlighting the "edge cases". Does the internet accurately represent the world and its opinion as a whole or is it just edge case after edge case.
👉 Oscar Have you read local newspapers? That might be a way for you to restore some faith in humanity. Mainstream media tend to have one or another form of political agenda so in turbulent times they can get rather nasty.

🥨 Shruthi Idk what notifications do now but would be great to be notified when someone replies to you
👉 Oscar There's a small counter and a red indicator in the sidebar whenever there's been an action (follow, reply, mention).

🌚 Nlggers How do you find Runnaroo it compares to Searx and DuckDuckGo? At one time I was using Startpage/Ixquick however they were recently acquired by a marketing firm with a history of surveillance. restoreprivacy.com...
👉 Oscar I've used DDG and Startpage in the past but didn't know the latter has been recently acquired, that sucks. Searx I hadn't heard about, will check it out at some point. Unfortunately I haven't had much time online the last few days so haven't done any extensive searching yet, but can report back after a week or so once I've I have some more thorough experience with it - just the initial tests seemed promising.

📀 Rob Trump vs Biden. Who do you think has got it?
👉 Oscar The fact that Trump is even considered for a second term by _anyone_ is mind-boggling to me. Disclaimer: I'm from Europe.

🧔 Justin Ok, point taken about free speech. I do think making a filter opt-out has its merits.
👉 Oscar Once it reaches more users at least. But the idea might also be that you just read the feeds of the people you follow.

🚴 Aditya IMO, given this is text only, using full width would actually reduce readability.

👉 Oscar Same as most - saw it on HN. I like it so far, only time will tell how it'll turn out.

🌚 Nlggers If Biden goes forward with the debates then I suspect that will work against him. I'm not sure this will be the case but I've heard Biden may choose not to debate Trump unless certain conditions are met (the presence of "real time fact checkers" + the release of his tax returns). I think the release of his tax returns would be good but I think someone saying "umm actually" every time Trump says anything at all would likely not be a value add.
👉 Oscar Haha "real time fact checkers" would be great. It'd end up with Trump having nothing to say about anything.
