🤔 John I've been super happy with my iPhone SE after moving from android this spring, and I'm considering treating myself to a MacBook for Christmas. I would love to hear opinions from the Sublevel community. I understand that performance per $ is lower than mid-level windows laptops, but I'm wondering if longevity and productivity make up for it?

👽 Paul Webb I have the latest MacBook Pro and while I like several things about it, I would not recommend it because of the keyboard. You will get used to typing on it but *tiny* specks of dust or whatever can get in but not out. It's hella irritating. My B button is stuck

🤔 John Hmm, the keyboard is a big sticking point for me. Thinking seriously about picking up the last of the 2015's at a pretty reasonable price. 16gb / 256gb i5 for $1250.

🏒 Lucian Marin Regarding longevity: the previous 15-inch MacBook Pro I bought in 2007 is still running and it's used by my family. The current 13-inch MacBook Pro I bought in 2013 is still fast on the latest version of macOS. You can run Windows, Linux, Haiku or any other OS on it using virtual machines or you can use Boot Camp to run Windows while transitioning to macOS.

☕ David Antoine I can just tell you mine is starting to slowly fall apart after nearly ten years of (at least) moderate use. Screen hinges start to wobble but are still stiff. The keyboard and track pad "disconnect" regularly for a short period of time but the track pad is still smooth a precise. The left CMD key popped out. Battery dead of course. The screen is still good, just few dead pixels on the left border of the screen and the are grey, so generally not really visible. Not bad but...

John Olinda I regularly use Windows, Linux, BSD, and macOS on various hardware. Regarding productivity: unless you're already using macOS-only or Windows-only software, you can probably work on almost anything. Regarding longevity: I'd recommend Thinkpads or other perhaps Dell business models for Linux or Windows use or a Mac that doesn't have the new keyboard. I shy away from buying new hardware though since I don't do extremely demanding work like video-editing.
