It can be done in JavaScript, but threads will still be rendered in full. Is clicking a button better than scrolling?

Certainly. Collapsing a thread if it becomes too large is required to maintain clarity of the page. That's part of what makes it possible to survive reddit :p

+1 - When I see a thread I am not interested on (might it be because of the topic, or because I've already read it) I click the collapse button and step onto the next thing!
