It's seems like every .com domain name is taken so moving on to other TLDs. Wonder if .ly or .io is less confusing to the general public.

Depending on your context, a .bit domain ( bit.namecoin.info/... ) may be useful for preventing trade-name hijacking between nation-states. But this is definitely not something that's universally easy for users. Special interest groups only, not general purpose name resolution.

The general public are confused by domains anyway, as long as Google finds you it doesn't matter so much.

.net is the second best TLD. Big names like Behance or Daring Fireball redirects .com to .net domain. Also, the usage statistics proves this is the case. keepalert.com/Doma...
