It is so depressing when someone works and forgets to press save and then wants an IT person to come and magically rescue the files. The worst part is that sometimes it does work which gives people false hope for the rest of the times.

Makes me consider if programs should just auto-save like they do on iOS & OS X. There's pro and cons to that, but for most people it's probably a good idea

Yeah, autosave by default with the option to turn it off if you need to for some reason.

I dislike autosave. Never needed it, for two reasons. || 1: in my experience, my desktop computers have basically never crashed (because I have never had the inclination to install large volumes of crap on my computer). Only Linux kernel panics have gotten me in the last decade. I don't remember the last BSOD I saw. || 2: I do not actually trust any computers to save my work. I save my work every time I make a significant addition/subtraction/revision.
