This is actually very common in Brazil, where everyone uses WhatsApp (a Facebook app). You record your voice message on your end and it appears as a playable audio clip for whoever you sent it to. I'm not a fan, but it is the favorite mode of communication of a lot of people, including my extended family.

Has anyone played Tibia? It's an old-school MMORPG I've heard about for a while and today I tried it. It's loads of fun, but feels a little grindy.
đ¨đģâđģ Moroni
It's super grindy. I played it a little, but I was more into Ragnarok.

Just bought a Synology box to easy how I backup my stuff. After the fact, I discovered it runs a Linux based OS. I think that means I'll be able to move some of my projects from my VPS to it. How fabulous! Does anyone here have a Synology or other NAS solution?

I host ZNC, nextcloud, baikal for DAV, a couple of static sites, and soon a pi-hole.

Cool!! TheLounge is an IRC web client that has something similar to an irc bouncer. Really good stuff, check it out if you don't know it. And AdGuard Home is similar to Pi-Hole. I was even able to install WireGuard to be able to use it when on my phone (LTE/4G connection). Proud of myself! :)

I just created my own VPS and I'm hosting TheLounge and AdGuard Home. Do you self-host? What do you self-host? github.com/awesome...

Ouch, $400 hurts, but at least they managed to recover it and you (hopefully) learned a lesson along the way and won't have to deal with a similar issue ever again :)

What's your setup for personal backups? I've just started using restic on an old HDD I found, still looking for a good (cheap) SSD to buy. I think I should use at least two hard drives for backups, maybe even do some fancy RAID... By the way, this post serves as a REMINDER TO DO YOUR BACKUPS!
đ¨đģâđģ Moroni
Oh, funny you asked that. One of my backup HDs is failing and I was stupid enough to not have that data in a second backup. I went to a data recovery lab and got an estimate of $400 to recover it. :(

Is adblock stealing? Do you use adblock? Why? Sure, advertisers don't have the right to your attention, but don't the content creators have the right to your financial support?
đ¨đģâđģ Moroni
The way I see it is that we don't have a say on what we want to share and what we want to keep to ourselves. Ad providers are invasive tracking machines. The only option we have is to block them, there is no middle ground. And looking at the content creator side, I bet most of them are also not happy to be dependent on ads to be financially sound. Unfortunately, they also have their hands tied and don't have many viable alternatives.

I miss going to the cinema so much. It was always so much more than just going to see a film. I would have a meal and a drink, either before or after; I'd read and listen to reviews; I'd carefully choose which films to see. I'm still not sure when I'll have my next cinema outing...

I read another day about the closure of the last BlockBuster and I was having a nostalgia similar to yours. The ritual of going to the store, picking up a movie among thousands of movies, preparing popcorn, sofa and blankets, dimming the lights...the end, rewind the tape, return it and do it all over.

I want the walkability of a city, but adjacent to the wilderness. Suburbs is the worst of both worlds.

I guess it depends on the size of your city... if it's a small city, the suburbs will be close to The wilderness. But I see what you mean!

I need to go to downtown today... it's been a long time since I went there, I would say maybe 2 years? What are you, a downtown or suburbs person?

My short answer is that I prefer a "downtown" area, for the walkability. But the neighborhood I live in is suburb-like while still being fairly walkable and I really like that.

What are you guys currently working on? I have created a little Netflix clone recently(JS only): studflix.de . Also i was getting into flutter recently :)
đ¨đģâđģ Moroni
Is that a YouTube curated list? I like it! Also, I read about flutter sometime ago. Really interesting stuff. But what I really can't wait to see is Blazor getting the tools it need and more adoption in the future.
