What would you recommend as an alternative if one uses many different machines during the course of a day?

It depends how you are able to link the machines. I use 1Password on my Mac and use the WLAN Server option so my phone can sync with it. If your machines are on the same network, use a network drive? At work we use KeePass with vaults on the internal SFTP that everyone can access, that might also be an option for you.
