Zero Edge I don't see how FSD makes mistakes like this. It should know the lanes from the mountains of data it is has... You can't afford to have edge cases for FSD: youtu.be/zDEWi2nC-...
☕ David Antoine I don't remember where I read about this but the Tesla FSD is only a level 2 autonomous driving system. Only Mercedes as a level 3 car. And real full autonomy is level 5... There is a long road ahead (pun intended). I think it can work only if every car is automated at the same level and "speaking" with other cars for positioning and awareness. A bit like the TCAS for aircrafts...

☕ David Antoine Found this very well done (for the budget) short sci-fi mini series, ATROPA. Seven episodes, about 10 min each. For those who want to give it at try... youtube.com/playli...

☕ David Antoine For those who like sci-fi, "The Silent Sea" is a great watch ... It's Korean. There is an English dubbed version but I didn't liked it, so I watched it in Korean with English subtitles...

🦿 Lucian Marin I introduced a profile ratio between replies sent and replies received. I hope it will balance out the network in 2022. I know some of you asked me for numbers on profiles, but a ratio is better than karma or popularity counts.
☕ David Antoine Interesting , thanks!

😌 Ismail argh I've found this network again! I forgot the name unfortunately and I vaguely remembered that this was from HN. I searched "text based social media" and boom. I'm back here again. Hello people, again !
☕ David Antoine Hi there! Welcome again...

🦿 Lucian Marin I implemented over the limit feature. I named the color redsmoke, similar to whitesmoke in CSS. Also, account data export using StrictYAML is now available. This will show that there's not algorithm behind Subreply; everything is sorted in reverse chronological order.
☕ David Antoine Very nice subtle red. Thx !

😀 Tom Yes! I got my bluetooth mouse to work in two different operating systems without having to re-pair them each time. Also, Windows 11 start menu is crap, but the rest of it is okay after a lot of heavy customization that 99.999% of people won't do, including using third party apps to fix the privacy stuff (hopefully) and a couple of other changes. Of course there are apps to change the start menu, but not sure if I want to bother with that since I don't plan on using Windows except for Photoshop and Word/Excel when I really have to.
☕ David Antoine I haven't upgraded to Windows 11 yet, the upgrade process on Win 10 is broken, I'll probably have to recover it, then switch to 11. Or I'm just going to replace it with a Linux distro but I don't know which one and distro hoping, even in virtual machine, is not something I want to do anymore... If I finally end up with Windows 11 I will use a "privacy" app as well and surely replace the start menu... It is strange, maybe they should have merge it with their search functionality, would have made more sense....

🦿 Lucian Marin Last time I simplified profiles so they can be shared on other sites. I'm trying to share mine everywhere I can. Character counter causes me anxiety, I can't focus. There's an idea to turn textarea red if you type over the limit.
☕ David Antoine A red textarea over the limit would do the trick too... Neat idea.

☕ David Antoine Would you bring back the threads and replies counters in the profile section? Always nice to keep track of those... The character counter when typing was nice too, but no more there... Bug or intentional?

Zero Edge Unfortunately it isn't possible with the tools we have even at full vaccination. There are animal reservoirs, not to mention the vaccine does not provide immunity just some kind of "better outcome". The previous vaccines were more of a one and done situation and provided real immunity. These vaccines are not in the same tier of immunity and require consistent "boosters". It is a lot harder to eradicate a virus (even if it did provide the correct immunity) when it requires the entire population of the world to have had a shot within the last 6 months as opposed to anytime in their life.
☕ David Antoine Yes, I almost forgot about animal reservoirs, birds mainly if I'm not mistaken. Although, the SARS-Cov-2 is a +RNA based virus that is all in one genetic sequence while the influenza is -RNA based and split in eight parts. If you have been contaminated with two strains at the same time, the potential for recombination along with mutations is significative in the latter. It can evolve a lot and you end up with something like the Spanish flu or the Swine influenza. If anything, the Cov-2 is more stable in that regard. Also, you shouldn't expect great efficiency from the actual vaccines when they only target the surface spike protein.

🦿 Lucian Marin We tried this before vaccines. It didn't work. Vaccines work a bit better, but they aren't a cure. We need Covid medicine.
☕ David Antoine Vaccines can eradicate a pandemic, like the smallpox if I'm not mistaken... But a lot of factors are involved so I don't know if we can do it for the SARS-COV-2...

Zero Edge The fact that no government has begun investing in N95 manufacturing just screams incompetence. Guess what provides better immunity than a vaccine? A N95 MASK! Guess what works regardless of what virus is going around? A N95 MASK! Guess what can stop ANY PANDEMIC IMMEDIATLY. N95 MASKS! Seriously, this not only helps the current situation but prepares you for ALL future pandemics with out having to develop a new vaccine each time which takes upwards of a year. If you had a stockpile of N95 masks when all of this started we would be living in a different world today. INVEST IN THE NOW AND INVEST IN THE FUTURE.
☕ David Antoine Not sure about that. Also depends on how the virus circulates and it's size, the quality of masks, face leakage, surgical mask or face respirator, etc. It certainly helps curbs a pandemic but I doubt it will stop it alone. It's a tool in the arsenal. But yes they should be used reasonably. It doesn't help now that the mRNA vaccines work to avoid severe illness for a limited time and cannot stop the replication because they indirectly present the immune system with only one surface protein of the virus. Not ideal. tandfonline.com/do...

🦿 Lucian Marin I've gone from 800 to 720 to 640. I don't know what was the reason the last time I changed the characters limit, but I trust the past me more than the future me. I think it has to do with the fact that more than 80 characters per line is hard to read and eventually more than 8 lines of text becomes annoying for the reader, not the writer.
☕ David Antoine The initial 640 is a good minimum anyway. Twitter set a bad trend when it comes to written language, imho, but you can also say the SMS started it first... That's why I prefer a higher limit. It's just better. I think it is the lack of paragraphs that makes more characters hard to read. At least in this format. So if you ever increase the limit over 640 again, it would probably help to let the text breathe with some space between a group of lines... I guess you can offer the option of a send button so that the enter key event is not detected as a send command... Just like Telegram, WhatsApp and the likes...

Zero Edge I don't understand the idea of vaccinating low risk individuals while having minimal long term data. I believe it is a choice that each individual should make for themselves but to me it seems like the high risk are placing their burdens on the low risk. The low risk have to inherit more risk to protect the high risk. Why?
☕ David Antoine One of our politicians in Belgium said that the unvaccinated should examine their conscience for basically putting vaccinated people at risk. In practice, one vaccinated will be safe in general while still possibly getting sick and transmitting the virus. If anything, they are a danger to the unvaccinated now. As to why? Well, $55bn for Pfizer this year, $40bn for Moderna just in "COVID market". Not sure it is still about heath at this point, contracts are signed for 2022.

Zero Edge Our culture is messed up. This is what "we" think: "Rape is bad except when it happens in prison and then it's deserved.". Just so screwed up. A prison sentence shouldn't mean a "rape sentence" as well yet no one cares about the prisoners being raped because politicians and culture see this as something acceptable or as a form of punishment. I am sorry that I think rape is apprehensible in all forms no matter who you are or what you have done.
☕ David Antoine A good start would be to not put every prisoners in the same penitentiary wings. Someone who just stole something shouldn't be put in jail with a murderer for exemple. I'm not sure prisoners are effectively separated according to their sentences in all western countries... You can't except small criminals to get better if they are near prisoners ten times worse then them...
