Lois what
Adam Douglas Hi Lois! This is one my haunts, though I mostly lurk. It's a cool community and a unique platform. Fighting the good fight.

🦿 Lucian Marin I'm very demotivated after the last job. I don't want to start anything new. After the previous job I started Markdawn and Sublevel. I was very optimistic about the future, now I'm not. I'm thinking about doing a project management app. This is my only idea.
Adam Douglas Been there. Try going freelance for a while, if that's feasible. Helped me a lot, good for the ego. I quit a job where I was just boosting an agency's reputation when I could have been building my own. So I went freelance. Otherwise, what about teaching? Another way to get an ego boost: teaching the next generation to things the right way. Answering people's questions on StackOverflow also buffed my ego, and I got headhunted after I answered a lot of questions on JS.

🦿 Lucian Marin I will definitely use Redis for my next project. I don't want to touch a database any longer. Sublevel will remain my only SQL oriented project. I will rather build complex structures and change them using procedures than figuring out that's the best path to access data using SQL. You can find a great introduction to Redis at matt.sh/what-is-redis written by Matt Stancliff.
Adam Douglas You won't look back.

Mark Dain What's everyone up to these days? Working on anything cool? I'm building a new website to host my resume/portfolio and a blog. I have something to show later this week, as right now there isn't much but it's live on a test URL.
Adam Douglas Taking a break from writing Javascript to write a book on Heidegger, Derrida and Wittgenstein.

Mark Dain I think people mean there's more important pursuits than just trying to get richer. Money is a tool that can accomplish a lot which is why people like it. I wish I were crazy rich I'd pour millions into Linux+Mozilla and I'd also start an ISP that does end-to-end encryption. But here the goal is securing the right to privacy rather than trying to make money from the ISP -- heck I'd probably run it at a loss if I had money to throw away just so I can get more people on board. For the record, I make enough to live comfortably without being in any real debt (I'm currently paying off a credit card from my visit to Texas last year).
Adam Douglas Sorry, I meant *"they don't have to think about it" I know of no pursuits more important than the acquisition of money. As you point out, the pursuits you perceive as being more important absolutely require money to be realised. Thus, by definition, money is more important. In terms of philosophical significance, yes, the ends are more important than the means, but not in reality.

Adam Douglas I hate money. I also hate people who say "there are more important things in life" -- I've yet to hear this from a person struggling financially. I've met homeless bums who say this, but there was an irony in their inflection and gaze that made it quite clear that money is of paramount importance. Typically it's some rich arsehole who says that money is not so important because they have to think about it.

Mark Dain I can't see a difference on my iPhone but Firefox on Linux (Ubuntu GNOME) looks different; It seems Firefox is using Cantarell rather than Ubuntu which I was used to seeing. I can't get Droid Sans to load when I try to force it. It's alright though, I could probably get used to it.
Adam Douglas I presume the font is in the native apps for Sublevel, not on the website, where a system font stack is used for performance.

😀 Tom Because of their feelings. No one said anything when Obama did the same thing.

Adam Douglas Big protest against Trump in Leeds today. Made it quite difficult to return to my home from the city. I wish these unemployed lefties would confine their childish rambling sessions to weekends. All of these peaceful protests achieve nothing but disruption to pragmatists. I don't understand why a 90 day hiatus to travel has provoked this kind of reaction, but sexually abusing women, torturing/kidnapping people and poor economic policy are all okay. Was the left so arrogant? Or did they realise their redundance and let the shit hit the fan so as to have a purpose?

🦿 Lucian Marin Today everyone is affected by politics. There're no more intermediary layers because of social media and direct access to information.
☕ David Antoine Well, I hope all the people that have voted for Clinton (I assume those protesters mainly have) are not as emotive as the once mainstream medias are delightfully showing on their "news"... Because if it is, good luck trying to have a constructive debate, it is nearly impossible like that. I'm maybe naive to think there isn't as much division between the American people but those who are protesting are giving a very poor image of themselves, not because they are protesting but because they do so without real arguments. They could, but all we see are tantrums... And it's worse when some of them riot. Hope the situation will calm down.

Mark Dain So true. I remember being on 4chan and seeing posts like "Bitcoin is now worth $1.40" with most people making fun of it. Back then you could even mine on a CPU still. If only I'd mined a few BTC, right?
Adam Douglas I remember that too. I had 10BTC just lying around. Lost access. Very annoying in the quieter freelance months.

Martijn Ad Gentoo to that list? Nice and all, an everything-compiled-from-source distro with a ton of settings for security that nobody can figure out.
Adam Douglas You might be interested in Pentoo as I think it has a simplified install process. pentoo.ch

Eric Getting Google in a new style when browsing it on Safari, same old on Chrome though. imgur.com/a/Aj42E Looks like a huge waste of space.

🦿 Lucian Marin Why aren't some results grouped together? I like how things are grouped on Chrome's new material design settings panel.
Adam Douglas Pretty sure the presence of structured data is required for grouping with other results.
