🦿 Lucian Marin I want to create a chat based app that works exactly like IRC. Slack, but public. Reddit, but no threads. Sublevel, but not social. Convore was the closest thing to this, but I'm not sure why they give up.
👽 Paul Webb Money is always the motive convore-blog.tumbl...

😀 Tom I've been waiting for months to get a burger at a particular resturant. Today I finally had an excuse to go. After I placed my order and waited a bit, I found out the kitchen had a fire while making my order and the kitchen was closed for the rest of the evening :-( Here's to waiting another month or so :-/
👽 Paul Webb Yeesh! What restaurant is this?

😀 Tom I'm conflicted. When I move back to Texas soon, I want to devote time to work on personal projects, but I also want to get involved with volunteering (Scouts). I feel like I can only choose one if I really want to dedicate myself to it. This is going to be on top of work which already has a hectic schedule.
👽 Paul Webb Is there a way you could (realistically) cut back on work?

🤔 John Hey, I've been watching for updates! Hadn't seen that the alpha was up. Looks great so far!
👽 Paul Webb I've been writing blog posts and sending out newsletters bi-weekly to share what I've learned and product updates.

🦿 Lucian Marin Implementation is key, not ideas. I really liked a lot of social networks at first, but once they grown the experience suffered.
👽 Paul Webb How has the experience suffered, to you?

🤔 John AFAIK you're the only one of us who's actually created a social network! I've been kicking around some high level ideas in terms of network interaction, but I'm not interested (or capable if I'm honest) of building my own. I'm mostly curious if the people here, who lean more technical than my Twitter feed, are thinking about the same kinds of limitations in existing social nets.
👽 Paul Webb I'm building one at socii.network! You can see it in action at hub.socii.network. It's not polished but I'm getting there.
🦿 Lucian Marin I wish I didn't delete it from App Store in the first place. I didn't know it will be almost impossible to get it back. But there's a chance you can get it back using Purchased option from App Store.
👽 Paul Webb Why did you delete it? Focusing more on web? Don't want to deal with walled gardens anymore?

🤔 John Logged back in here, and wishing I hadn't deleted the app. How's it going folks?
👽 Paul Webb I had no idea the app was removed, I still have it on my phone.

🤔 John So, there's a lot of talk on here about social networks, especially since sub level is an experimental social network with a modest community of quality users. I know some of you have talked about or are working on your own network. I agree that existing networks have evolved in ways I'm not happy with. What can we do differently? What could separate your network (or the next alternative network) from the existing ones? What problems are they and aren't they solving?
👽 Paul Webb Haha, I agree with Tom but I can share some high-level ideas. The main thing is changing the incentive for network operators. Currently, advertising rules all so I'm taking that away with Socii. Being user-funded, with a marketplace isn't going to make me super successful or cash positive anytime soon and I'm okay with that.

😀 Tom Damn emotions... New journal list I'm starting: "Things that make me cry."
👽 Paul Webb Tears of the Sun was the first movie that made me cry. I watched it with my dad. Also, The 13th Warrior.

👽 Paul Webb Testing. Hmm, okay.

🦿 Lucian Marin Every product or service sees changes, but the core of Sublevel remained the same. I won't introduce any new product features, just polish how it works today.
👽 Paul Webb Of course changes happen but to the extent Sublevel changed in a month span? I haven't seen that since Classface.
6y, 11w reply
🦿 Lucian Marin I'm not giving up on Sublevel even if I'm the only user. I think it's gonna be great since web tech will evolve and I'll adopt everything that works. Let's see if I can bring editing...
👽 Paul Webb I say go for it man!

😀 Tom Comment on reddit: "Most people don't want to have a million dollars. Most people want to spend a million dollars. That's why most people will never have a million dollars."
👽 Paul Webb Hah! I agree with that.

👽 Paul Webb Unfortunately, my main browser (Firefox) doesn't support webp so I do see some loading. I just had an idea to have a lil' gradient animation...that could work!

👽 Paul Webb I haven't been super active on social media for the past month and that's because of the work I'm doing on my own. To manage images, I've created a service that converts jpg/png to webp. Only Chrome supports it natively but I have a hacky plugin that replaces webp with base64'd data in other browsers.
