What's a good first audio book? I spend a lot of time reading, but I've none listened to any audiobooks. Listened to podcasts tho.
It's a good format for "popular" books - the kind you would just read once all the way through rather than keep going back to reread and understand passages. For science books like "The Gene" or any book about current affairs
Ohhh! Great question! So, full disclosure - this is my first time with an audio book, and I am listening to "White Fragility" and as well as listening closely, I am taking notes because we are going to discuss it in our book club next month.
what do you think so far?
I did not know about that. Do you have a recommendation for Firefox?
Does the action in movies being scripted make them less enjoyable for you?
it would if i thought it was a documentary and then realized it wasn't
I used to think that listening to audio books was "cheating" somehow; I don't really know why. But I am currently listening to a non-fiction book and I am really enjoying it. How do you feel about audio books?
Learning should be fun, not work, so you can't cheat haha. Honestly, audio is such a great way to learn and absorb information. My only gripe is its inefficient sometimes, because I read faster than I listen...is that true for you too?
I was wondering why I stopped watching pro wrestling and it finally dawned on me that I stopped right around the time I got my first girlfriend.
did knowing the games were fixed not do it for ya?
I was breaking up with Facebook from time to time, but almost always the one thing I was coming back to, was the events section
seems like the new design recognizes this, emphasizing groups and events over newsfeeds. if those features are useful to you, then why quit at all? maybe download the newsfeed blocker if you find yourself accidentally 'doomscrolling' after logging on to check events
#TOTD This is a question that a colleague asked me a couple years ago, and it just keeps coming back to me. If one becomes informed about the damage that our meat consumption is causing on the planet, does it become immoral for one to consume meat? Say, if you watch a couple documentaries on Netflix and continue consuming meat, does that make you a bad person? I don't really have an answer. I think about it every time I eat a burger.
The moralistic tone that this debate has taken I think had the positive effect of making a bunch of people vegan/vegetarian very quickly, but the (larger?) negative effect of paralyzing everyone unable to make that leap. I think the right way to look at this is that you now have some new information about the 'true' cost of per unit of meat you eat. It's up to you each time you consume to see if that consumption is worth the cost to you.
Why is subreply so positive compared to Twitter which is often negative? Is it purely like and retweet counts? Number of users?
I wonder what twitter was like in the early days? Also, seems like people are not really that political here (yet), which seems to be the source of much of twitter's meanness.
That is strange. I wonder if this will have a noticeable impact on their stock price. Do you think their stock will substantially fall tomorrow?
seems to have taken a hit pre-market. my point above though is that as ubiquitous as twitter feels to a certain sort of person, they haven't grown their market cap in 5 years
If you haven't used it before, check out hn.algolia.com for searching past submissions with keywords, urls, etc. For example: hn.algolia.com/?da...
second this, hn.algolia.com is lifechanging (literally in that I now actually use hacker news on a quasi weekly basis, vs before it would never stick)
Who has any thoughts on the Twitter hack?
the dashboard seems super creepy
