🦿 Lucian Marin Facebook looks like Microsoft Encarta which Wikipedia eventually killed. So, maybe an open-source project can kill Facebook too. Wikipedia isn't decentralized and it's a lot more text based than Encarta used to be.
Martijn Wikipedia survives on generous grants and donations, and spends a few million USD every month. If you want to be the Wikipedia to Facebook's Encarta, the real question is where you will get the money to do so. Though I might just be too cynical.

🦿 Lucian Marin Wikipedia needs to pay editors. An open-source social network needs to pay only for servers and bandwidth.

😀 Tom And moderators (if you want a manual review when people report stuff that's against the ToS or is illegal). I think the ideal open-source social network is one that's decentralized and easily-self-hosted by the average person, like AIM used to be. Content can be mirrored on friends' computers that is X number of degrees of separation (maybe pictures 1 degree, and text 2 degrees). Such a program is on my dream list of projects to eventually tackle.
