Martijn Can any non-total heathen explain why it is so hard to determine when Easter is? Why didn't they just pick a date during the Council of Nicea and decide on a moving date? ?

Eric The biblical events of Easter occurred around Passover, which is determined by the first full moon following the vernal equinox. You need to be asking why Passover is a moving date first :)

John Olinda The early church had to decide between celebrating the resurrection of Christ on the actual day of the Jewish lunar calendar that it happened on and celebrating it on Sunday, the day of the week it happened on. They decided to go ahead and compromise with the system we have. Apparently the Catholic church is still considering just picking a fixed Sunday. If it had been up to me, I would have gone with a fixed date on the Gregorian calendar, like they did with Christmas.
