🦿 Lucian Marin Energy impact of movie players on OS X: VLC 120, MPlayerX 90, mplayer 60, QuickTime 30. Since running mplayer from command line isn't a nice experience, picking MPlayerX over VLC seems the right choice for playing MKV files.
Martijn Yet another reason to use the one made by Apple, in other words. Much like how using Safari gives you more web browsing hours. I might give QuickTime a try again. How does MPlayerX (or mplayer) do with FLV files? I use VLC a lot for those (on Android too). Converting MKV to MP4 is doing well for me. Many do not even need to be reencoded, just repackaged: ffmpeg -i input.mkv -codec copy output.mp4

🦿 Lucian Marin That command line works great! Now only if it was an AppleScript service for Finder... I don't know about FLV, but MPlayerX handles H.265 better than VLC. H.265 is my new favorite video codec.
