I guess everyone has interest in supporting everything: Microsoft wants to use Linux for its Azure platform (or, to put it better, people want to deploy Linux software on Azure), and Google is in same position with running .NET on AppEngine. I don't think there's anyone who could have predicted this kind of cross pollination of technologies that used to belong to only one platform exclusively.
