Martijn Steam overlay actually works for you? I always turn the damn thing off because it gets in the way...

Mark Dain Uplay has it's own overlay, which if you disable (and disable fraps) it'll work! Steam overlay means I can browse the web, listen to music, chat to people, etc... It's great! It shouldn't get in the way unless you're pressing Shift+Tab a lot (and you can change the key combo).
